چکیده
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to to characterize and analyze in-situ flow and transport within the vadose zone during a mid-scale hydrologic infiltration experiment. This project has employed numerical and experimental tools developed under a previously funded EMSP proposal (project number 55332) to provide 3-D unsaturated hydrologic property distributions. In the present project, geophysical imaging techniques have been employed to track analogue contaminant plumes. The results are providing a better understanding of transport modes including the influence of natural heterogeneities and man-made structures within the vadose zone at DOE sites. In addition the data is providing checks against which numerical flow and transport simulations can be compared.

Accounting for Tomographic Resolution in Estimating Hydrologic Properties from Geophysical Data
Geophysical measurements increasingly are being used in hydrologic field stud- ies because of their ability to provide high-resolution images of the subsurface. In particular, tomographic imaging methods can produce maps of physical property distributions that have significant potential to improve subsurface characteriza- tion and enhance monitoring of hydrologic processes. In the tomogra...

متن کاملAdvanced Remedial Methods for Metals and Radionuclides in Vadose Zone Environments – 11026
Functionally, the methods for addressing contamination must remove and/or reduce transport or toxicity of contaminants. This problem is particularly challenging in arid environments where the vadose zone can be up to hundreds of feet thick, rendering transitional excavation methods exceedingly costly and ineffective. Delivery of remedial amendments is one of the most challenging and critical as...

Flooding is one of the most devastating natural disasters occurring annually in the Philippines. A call for a solution for this malady is very challenging as well as crucial to be addressed. Mapping flood hazard is an effective tool in determining the extent and depth of floods associated with hazard level in specified areas that need to be prioritized during flood occurrences. متن کاملRisk assessment of industrial hydrocarbon release and transport in the vadose zone as it travels to groundwater table: A case study
In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...
